Edremit (Greek: Αδραμύττιο Adramyttio) is a town on the Aegean Sea coast, west of Balıkesir province. Edremit is the third largest district of Balıkesir province and is known for its olive cultivation and Kaz Mountains. Altınoluk and Akçay, which are the first important centers of domestic tourism, are in this district.
Edremit, known as Adramytteion in Antiquity, is a city founded in 1443 BC under the name of Pidasus, in the Karataş locality around the Burhaniye Pier. Due to its location on the Troy-Bergama road, it suffered many raids and fell into the hands of the Lydian King Croesus in a devastated state. The king's brother rebuilt this city and even decorated it and named it after himself Adramys. In 1231, Turkish raiders attacked Edremit and after tough battles, Turkish Commander Yusuf Sinan was given the key to the city. With the passage of Karesi lands to the Ottomans in 1336, Edremit was taken into the borders of the Ottoman State by Orhan Gazi.
During the War of Independence; Hamdi Bey, who is the District Governor in Edremit, is dismissed from his duty at the request of the occupying forces. Hamdi Bey settles in with his brother-in-law in Burhaniye. He organized the Akbaş Raid with the Kuvâ-yi Milliye organization he founded in Burhaniye on September 15, 1919, and transferred a large number of weapons and ammunition to Anatolia. He was martyred by the Greek collaborator gangs (Ahmet Anzavur and his men) on February 17, 1920. The people of Edremit, who were under occupation for 797 days, went through many dangers. On September 9, 1922, he met the Turkish cavalry chasing the enemy and embraced them. This day is celebrated every year as Independence Day with bright ceremonies.
