Aliağa is a district of Turkey's Izmir Province. The district is surrounded by Bergama in the north, Foça and Menemen districts in the south, Manisa province in the east, and the Aegean Sea in the west.
It bears traces of the civilizations of Izmir and Bergama. 4 of the 12 cities, which are the largest and most important among the cities of Aiolis, whose number exceeds 30 on the shores of the Aegean Sea, are within the borders of Aigai, Kyme, Myrna and Gryneion.
While it was affiliated to the Menemen district, it was made a district in 1982. While agriculture was the main economic activity in Aliağa in the past, it has turned into an industry and port city with state and private sector investments.
Located in the north of İzmir, on the shore of Çandarlı Bay, Aliağa has a surface area of 379 km2.[1] The district is surrounded by Bergama in the north, Foça and Menemen districts in the south, Yunusemre district of Manisa in the east, and the Aegean Sea in the west.
The territory of the district consists of mountains, plateaus, low hills, Güzelhisar Delta, Güzelhisar Graben, coastal plains and alluvial plains. The dominant lithological rocks are andesite, basalt, tuff and anglomerate.
Karahasan Mountain 854 m, Çirkince Peak 509 m, Akkemik Mountain 498 m and Karadevlit Hill 423 m are important elevations. While the Western Anatolian grabens were forming, volcanic material was ejected from the fractures as a result of tectonism. Karahasan Mountain is a volcanic mountain formed during this time. Bozdevlit Tepe and Karadevlit Tepe are volcanic hills formed during the Miocene period.
The Güzelhisar Graben extends from approximately the middle of the district lands in the SE-NW direction. The Güzelhisar Stream, which settled in the graben, formed a 4.7 km² delta in the area where it empties into the Aegean Sea. The small lagoon on the edge of Aliağa Bay of the Güzelhisar Delta is an important wetland area where Aliağa Bird Sanctuary[2] is located. The tea flows in the Karaalan Plain before spilling into the sea.
The 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th class lands that should be used in agriculture constitute 32.1% of the district lands. The 5th, 6th and 7th class lands that are not suitable for agriculture are 67.9%.
There is a tectonic hot spring in Ilıca Burun, at the western end of the Aliağa Peninsula. The shores of the district are of the transverse type. It consists of many bays and headlands. It has a total of 63 km long coast, 37 km of which is low coast and 26 km of which is high coast. In Çandarlı Bay, there are small islands close to the coast: Akkuş Island, Bozburun Islands, Twin Islands.
