Patara port has been important in terms of grain storage and shipping. One of the 3 important grain warehouses (Granarium) in the Eastern Mediterranean is located in Patara. The city, which continued its development in the Byzantine period, was considered important by the Christians. Saint Nicholas, known as Santa Claus, is also said to be from Patara.
Patara harbor, which is 400 meters wide and 1600 meters deep, starts to fill with sand and boats have difficulty in docking, causing Patara to lose its importance. Sand blown by the wind fills the harbor over time and covers the city to a large extent. Some of the ruins that can be seen in the city today were unearthed under the sands in a well-preserved condition.
In addition, there are the remains of Anatolia's first radio station, located 750 meters from the parliament building, which is the ancient city structure of Patara. It is understood from the ruins of the station that the Patara radio telegraph station, which served for 7 years as a communication network during the Ottoman Empire, was severely damaged during the bombardment of the Italian navy in 1911 during the Ottoman-Italian war.
